Aydin Nurhan - Retired Ambassador
Who Am I and What Have I Done?
I was born in 1949 in Adapazarı. My education began at Afyon, Kadınana Primary School. Then Talas American Secondary School and Tarsus American College, and I later graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Law. After completing my legal education, I worked shortly as a lawyer then joining diplomacy.
As a junior officer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent me to the Armed Forces School of Intelligence and Languages, Department of Arabic. After an eight month training, I was sent as a Third Secretary to the Turkish Embassy in Jeddah.
Throughout my career, I served in various parts of the world. In the earlier years of my career, I held diplomatic posts in Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. Then was Consul General in Azerbaijan, Austria, and Australia. I also served as an international diplomat at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) with the title Director General for Science and Technology. Then I was the Ambassador of Türkiye to Ghana, also accredited to Togo and Benin.
At the Headquarters in Ankara, I was the Acting Chairman of the Center for Strategic Research (SAM) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I was also one of the three diplomats taking role in the establishment of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).
In 2013, upon the offer and nomination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I retired and was appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to Afghanistan, a position I held until 2017.
Furthering my experience at the Center for Strategic Research (SAM) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I joined Turkish Asian Strategic Research Center (TASAM) as Deputy Chairman. Based in Ankara, later I joined Ankara Center for Crisis and Policy Studies (ANKASAM) as the Senior Adviser to the Chairman. My consultative activities continue at both institutions.
Beyond my diplomatic career, I have been active in academia and media. I have worked as a newspaper columnist, a radio program producer and presenter, television commentator, and a university lecturer. My primary field of interest has been strategic studies and globalization, topics on which I have delivered numerous conferences and published various articles. My writings and speeches have been featured in Turkish, Ghanaian, and U.S. media.

- Additionally, my article “Strategic Research Culture in Developing Countries” was published in ”Türkiye’de Stratejik Düşünce Kültürü ve Stratejik Araştırma Merkezleri – Başlangıcından Bugüne Türk Düşünce Kuruluşları” a book compiled of articles on strategy by Hasan Kanbolat as an important reference on strategic thinking and research institutions.
In recognition of my works, I have been honored with the Benin Republic Order of Merit, an Honorary Doctorate from Nakhchivan Private University, and TASAM Strategic Vision Award.
I am married and the father of two children. With my experience in diplomacy, academia, and media, I continue to explore, interpret, and share my insights on the world.
